We got the book done in a few weeks.
I remember getting the proofs from the printer and felt something was missing. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it but something told me the manual required a little touch to make it special. This book needed to equal The Walking Dead franchise’s commitment to quality storytelling!
And so it begins. Many a late night and tons of caffeine to meet this deadline, the Owner’s manual production was in full effect.

Regie, my writing partner, and I were considering what to do for San Diego Comic-Con 2012. We were told that Future US was creating a car that definitely struck the heart of The Walking Dead & Hyundai brands. Their Elantra was a primer colored, battle ready car with a weapon arsenal to survive the apocalypse. Some of the parts had names but, for the most part, I felt that the vehicle’s real credit to cool would be to build a story around it.
Hyundai and Skybound had already begun building a Zombie Survival Car for San Diego Comic-Con 2012. The vehicle was to be built by master crafter Gary Castillo of Design Craft Fabrication. The Elantra ZSE was already well into development and was under the direction of Robert Kirkman himself. Skybound provided illustrations to help the fabricators build what would be seen. The result was pretty cool in my opinion. Still, I wanted to see more and this lit a fire in me for the following year. I didn’t get to art direct any of this. But, it would pave the wave of inspiration and all good things to come.
Around May 2012, I was freelancing at Innocean on a project for Hyundai. I remember sitting in my usual grind and hammering away for a deadline when my producer, Ashley, came in. She asked that I attend a meeting with my writer Regie Miller, mynameisregie.com , concerning AMC’s The Walking Dead.
